Crystal Palace vs Manchester United – Head to Head
- Man United and CSKA Moscow met each other in the 2009/10 Champions League group stage with United winning 1-0 in Moscow and drawing the return match 3-3 at Old Trafford after falling behind 3-1. Both teams managed to advance from the group stage that year. United has struggled against Russian sides in the past with just one victory in eight encounters. They have three draws at home against Russian sides, but have yet to beat one on home soil.
United was beaten 2-1 in Holland by PSV Eindhoven in their opening group contest and then rebounded to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford in their second outing. CSKA Moscow was beaten 1-0 by Wolfsburg in their first group fixture and then downed PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in their second game. Man United has been shutout two times in a row at home now in all competitions and have won just one of their past six fixtures in all competitions with only four goals scored in those games. Oddly enough, all four goals came in road contests.
The English side has drawn their past four games overall with the last three each being 0-0. However, they were knocked out of the League Cup by Middlesbrough in a penalty shootout last week. United is unbeaten in their past seven European home fixtures with six wins and a draw. Moscow leads the Russian league and are on a 10-match unbeaten streak with seven wins and three draws since losing their first Champions League group contest. They’ve also put together a team-record 21 game unbeaten string in the Russian Premier-Liga.
It looks like United will be without English international left-back Luke Shaw for this game while Moscow will be missing Vasili Berezutski and Israeli midfielder Bibras Natcho. United is also expected to be without Dutch international winger Memphis Depay as well as winger/fullback Antonio Valencia. There should be some goals in this game since CSKA Moscow has allowed at least one goal against in their past 19 Champions League matches. Their last clean sheet was against Trabzonspor of Turkey back in November of 2011.
In addition, Moscow keeper Akinfeev has allowed at least one goal in 34 straight Champions League appearances, including qualifying games. The last time he posted a clean sheet was a 0-0 against Arsenal in England in November of 2006. Moscow has one victory, three draws and a pair of losses in their six trips to England so far. Their lone win s 2-1 at Manchester City last year.
